So Baby Number Two (JJ) is here! And holy cow am I exhausted! As I’m sure you can imagine, I have not been getting much sleep, and have had little time to move forward with the new album or other projects.
But that’s okay. That doesn’t mean I’m sitting around dormant.
Here’s what’s On The Burner.
The Art Of Tactful Procrastination
Here’s a run down of where things are with all the songs (in no particular order or official tracklisting):
“The Art of Tactful Procrastination” – Might be adding a couple guitar parts to this to beef up the verses, cut a couple things in the chorus and do some editing/effects on another one of the guitars. Lyrics are slowly progressing on this one.
“Wait of The World” – Musically this is completely done. I just need to edit a couple things, work on lyrics (also slowly progressing) and record vocals. This might end up being the lead single. I don’t know for sure yet.
“Still No Closer To Tomorrow” – There are a couple parts I need to redo on this, and make some arrangement decisions about where I want certain parts to be. Other than that this is mainly waiting on lyrics and vocals.
“Unnamed Song A” – This is a faster pop song that has had its arrangement laid out, and a few parts recorded. After listening back I’m going to change the style up a little, do a completely different lead and not have it so cluttery/busy. Right now it’s too “Lady With The Spinning Head“.
“Addie” – The music for this is completely done. No question. Lyrics are gradually coming together and it will need vocals.
“Long Day” – Music for this is done however I may be removing or redoing some acoustic guitar parts I did for it. I’m not convinced I need them yet. Lyrics and vocals still need to be completed.
“Bleeding Heart” – Lyrics are forthcoming. The song is musically complete, however, I am going to redo (for like the millionth time) a Coldplay-like guitar in the chorus. I think it sounds fine now, but it could be better. The good news is that if I can’t get it better than it is, I have what I have to fall back on.
“Outside” – This is musically complete, however, I want to record a harmony guitar to the solo at the end. That’s it. Lyrics and vocals still need completing.
“Unnamed Song B” – A slow, but really pretty (and dark) song. Music is done, however, I’m going to be re-recording a couple parts that still don’t sound quite right. There are a couple loop arrangement things I need to do as well. Lyrics and vocals need to be done for this too.
“If Anybody Asks You” – Musically this is done, however, I’m debating if I need to drop this from the D key to the C key. If so, I’m going to try and turn the parts into loops that I can simply drop to C from D. If that doesn’t work I’m sticking with D because I don’t want to re-record everything. This is a matter of what’s the best key for my voice.
“Unnamed Song C” – This is a Depeche Mode sounding song, could also be a single. Music is pretty much done but it needs perhaps an extra acoustic guitar and some kind of electric guitar to fill it out. It’s otherwise straight synthesized right now.
“The Storm” – Definitely the closer song. Music is completely done. So are the lyrics. The only thing this one needs is vocals.
I’m hoping to start accomplishing all of these things over the next couple months. As I noted in a previous post, I’m no longer in a rush, since it’s obvious this album is not coming out this year, and I really need to build my fanbase if I hope to have any chance at raising the money to post-produce and release it.
Nonetheless, I’m sure you’ve seen the logo change and some of the thematic updates on my website. Which leads me to…
Updating Look And Ender Bowen TV
I took some time earlier this fall to start putting together a new logo and feel specific to this upcoming album. It evolves the standard “Ender Bowen-And-Star” logo into something that’s a little more artsy and haphazard, evoking the feel I want for this album period. I’m still sticking with the classic stuff for Operation: Joy and God Jots because I don’t feel this logo and art really fits with the themes of those projects. I’m gradually rolling out new images for The Journal and The Studio Journal etc.
You may have also noticed that I’ve brought back The Video Journal and In The Studio (though sporadically). These are the small beginnings of what I’m calling Ender Bowen TV, which essentially are videos that I will (most often) do live via Facebook Live and then cross post to YouTube. I will be building upon this with more music videos and other visual content, including Wireless Garage, a bi-weekly live acoustic show that I will be performing from my garage starting in January (I hope). And I’ll evolve the idea from there.
I’m still developing my marketing plans. I’m taking online music marketing courses and learning a whole lot about how to take advantage of social media, how to turn my mail list into a power house and how to better find the people who would want to hear my music – because they do exist. You’ve likely seen or have been a part of that by taking the survey I put out last month that asked for your input on what bands I sound like (the top two were U2 and Depeche Mode). You may also have opted to be a part of my social media team and/or my listening feedback team (for the latter, expect to hear some stuff in the coming months if not sooner).
What’s Coming Up
I’m sorry it’s taking so long to get new music out. But rest assured I’m doing everything I can to make sure it’s worth all the work that’s being put into it. And if consistently doing this “On The Burner” thing for an entire year is any indication – it will get done, because I won’t stop.
Stay tuned. Lots to come!
