A year ago I started On The Burner as a means to keep you apprised of what it is I’m working on, what I’ve been getting accomplished, and what I had coming up, on a monthly basis. I think it’s gone quite well, and despite some setbacks I had last year, I feel that coming in here and posting about the prior month and the month to come has really kept me moving forward. Sometimes – as is the case here I think – when you’re accountable pretty much only to yourself, you lose sight of your goals, or otherwise lose some of your momentum. So it’s good that I am accountable to you in some way, by giving this monthly report.
As I sat here this morning to write this month’s update, I thought “wouldn’t it be a cool idea to revisit last year’s On The Burner from January and see where I am now in comparison?” If you’ve got financials and real business growth, one thing you will do is look at your trends and growth year over year, usually in the same quarters. (ie: “We made $1million in quarter 4 of 2017 compared to $750k in quarter 4 of 2016”). Since I don’t really have a lot to show on the financial end of things (yet), why not look at our January of 2017 and compare it to now?
The Art Of Tactful Procrastination
When I wrote my first On The Burner, I had just released the “A Work In Progress…” promotional video designed to create some buzz around the new album, the sound and the potential look. At the time, the video was put together using only the demo material I’d recorded in Fall of 2014. I had seven strong demos and wanted to get up to twelve songs. The idea was that I’d have a new album out in the Fall of 2017.
As of this writing, I have twelve songs that I’m either finishing up recording on, or making some finishing touches. I’m still working on lyrics and haven’t really recorded many vocals for anything. It’s a bit of a bummer that I still feel so far behind but the silver lining here is that I’m not rushing anything that I feel is subpar. Additionally, I’ve been able to build other parts of my website and mail list such that I now have a dedicated Listening Feedback Group (join the mail list if you want to be a part of it) that will – as we move along – be a pivotal part of the process.
It’s coming. I promise. Keep a watch out for stuff.
Last year I talked about the (at the time) recent release of Operation: Joy and that I was in the midst of working on a second book with 30 more daily Joy missions, with the expectation that it would be out in 2017. Obviously, that second book hasn’t yet happened (it’s still in development). But on the flipside, one of the other books I had talked about potentially doing in that series did come out last summer – The Dream Divide! I’m really proud of that one, so give it a look.
I still have Operation: Joy on my calendar of things to do this year. In fact, if you pay attention to my social media accounts you’ll see that I’ve been posting a lot daily missions in the form of image cards. I even have an Operation: Joy Facebook Group!
Things on this front are probably going to be quiet for a little while, save for a blog here and there, but rest assured I have a lot more coming out for that in due time. I’ve already started on the process on some Operation: Joy videos!
And that seems to be all I was focused on in early 2017.
So let’s move on to what’s going on now!
Things are still in development and moving forward here. A lot of what I’m doing right now has to do with design, and some of that design (particularly for things like The Video Journal) is waiting for the visual elements for the new album to evolve. As I want to keep much of a cohesive look across my brands, it’s hard to move forward with too much without knowing what the future look and feel of Ender Bowen is going to be.
That being said, I plan a soft launch of The Wireless Garage – a bi-weekly acoustic set performance LIVE on Facebook – sometime here in January. The plan had always been for the 8th, but I’ve had to push that back a little bit. There will be an announcement on Facebook and on the mail list when it’s time.
And those are the main things I’m focusing on. Website development still continues but at this point anything further is going to evolve from what I learn with my marketing experiments and how that all goes together with the new album etc.
Stay tuned! More to come!
